  8.        2.  _I_n_s_t_a_l_l_a_t_i_o_n__I_n_f_o_r_m_a_t_i_o_n

  10.        This chapter provides information about installing IRIS ATM
  11.        software. The information listed here is product-specific;
  12.        for general information about installing software, refer to
  13.        the _S_o_f_t_w_a_r_e _I_n_s_t_a_l_l_a_t_i_o_n _A_d_m_i_n_i_s_t_r_a_t_o_r'_s _G_u_i_d_e.

  15.        The IRIS ATM product consists of a hardware component and a
  16.        software component. The hardware component is an IRIS ATM
  17.        board and associated items; the software is on the CD-ROM.
  18.        To install the IRIS ATM product, follow the procedures in
  19.        the overview below. The procedures must be followed in the
  20.        order they are listed.
  21.  
  22.          1.  Install the software, using the instructions in this
  23.              document in Section 2.2, ``Installing IRIS ATM
  24.              Software.''
  25.  
  26.          2.  Configure the software, using the instructions in the
  27.              _I_R_I_S _A_T_M _C_o_n_f_i_g_u_r_a_t_i_o_n _G_u_i_d_e.
  28.  
  29.              Note:  Do not configure IRIS ATM as the primary IP
  30.                     network interface.  IRIS ATM as a primary IP
  31.                     network connection is not supported in this
  32.                     release.

  34.          3.  Have an authorized field service engineer install the
  35.              hardware using the field service document, _I_R_I_S _A_T_M
  36.              _I_n_s_t_a_l_l_a_t_i_o_n _I_n_s_t_r_u_c_t_i_o_n_s.

  38.          4.  Verify the ATM connection, using the instructions in
  39.              the section ``Verifying the ATM Subsystem,'' in the
  40.              _I_R_I_S _A_T_M _C_o_n_f_i_g_u_r_a_t_i_o_n _G_u_i_d_e.

  44.        2.1  _G_e_n_e_r_a_l__I_n_s_t_a_l_l_a_t_i_o_n__I_n_f_o_r_m_a_t_i_o_n

  46.        This section contains general information about the IRIS ATM
  47.        software.  This information is useful during installation
  48.        and configuration.

  50.        2.1.1  _A_T_M__N_e_t_w_o_r_k__I_n_t_e_r_f_a_c_e__N_a_m_e_s  During design, the
  51.        logical IP network interface for each controller board that
  52.        supports the IP network stack is given a name.  The ATM
  53.        network interface name is as specified below:

  55.        _a_t_m#     Unlike many network products that support only one
  56.                 IP network interface for each physical port, IRIS
  57.                 ATM can support multiple IP network interfaces on
  58.                 each port.  The exact number of IP interfaces that

  279.        verify that IRIS ATM 2.1 (Origin) or ATM 1.0 (CHALLENGE) or
  280.        earlier is not installed.

  310.              explained in chapter 4 of the ``_S_o_f_t_w_a_r_e _I_n_s_t_a_l_l_a_t_i_o_n

  337.              Notes: ``Local'' refers to connecting the CD-ROM (or
  338.                     tape) player directly to the target system (the
  339.                     system onto which you are installing software).
  340.                     ``Remote'' refers to loading the software over
  341.                     the target system's Ethernet network connection
  342.                     using a CD-ROM (or tape) device connected to a
  343.                     different Ethernet station.
  344.  
  345.                     In order to install software from a remote
  346.                     distribution directory, your system must be
  347.                     physically connected to the Ethernet and it
  348.                     must have a functioning Ethernet connection.
  349.  
  350.          2.  Locate the following items:
  351.  
  352.              -    For installation from a peripheral device, locate
  353.                   the CD-ROM disk containing IRIS ATM software. If
  354.                   you specially ordered another medium (for
  355.                   example, tape), locate that item.
  356.  
  357.              -    For installation from a peripheral device, locate
  358.                   a device to play (read) the CD-ROM or tape. This
  359.                   device is not shipped with the IRIS ATM product;
  360.                   it belongs to your site.
  361.  
  362.              -    For installation from a distribution directory,
  363.                   determine the host name of the Ethernet station
  364.                   and the path to the directory.
  365.  
  366.          3.  Set up the installation hardware.
  367.  
  368.              -    If you are using a local device, follow the
  369.                   instructions in your system's owner's guide to
  370.                   connect the peripheral device.
  371.  
  372.              -    If you are using a remote device, follow the
  373.                   remote workstation or server's instructions for
  374.                   attaching peripheral devices.
  375.  
  376.              -    For installation from a distribution directory,
  377.                   verify that the IRIS ATM software has been loaded
  378.                   onto the station.  A section of the _S_o_f_t_w_a_r_e
  379.                   _I_n_s_t_a_l_l_a_t_i_o_n _A_d_m_i_n_i_s_t_r_a_t_o_r'_s _G_u_i_d_e provides
  380.                   instructions on preparing distribution

  399.        2.2.3  _I_n_s_t_a_l_l_i_n_g__t_h_e__S_o_f_t_w_a_r_e  Use the live installation
  400.        method to install the IRIS ATM software (atm).  To install
  401.        the default subsystems, use the "_i_n_s_t_a_l_l _a_t_m" and "_g_o"
  402.        commands once you have invoked _i_n_s_t.  Step-by-step
  403.        instructions are provided in Chapter 4 of the _S_o_f_t_w_a_r_e
  404.        _I_n_s_t_a_l_l_a_t_i_o_n _A_d_m_i_n_i_s_t_r_a_t_o_r'_s _G_u_i_d_e.
  405.  
  406.        If you are not sure how to use _i_n_s_t, Chapter 5 in the
  407.        _S_o_f_t_w_a_r_e _I_n_s_t_a_l_l_a_t_i_o_n _A_d_m_i_n_i_s_t_r_a_t_o_r'_s _G_u_i_d_e provides
  408.        details.

  410.        When you have finished installing the new software, follow
  411.        the steps in the _I_R_I_S _A_T_M _C_o_n_f_i_g_u_r_a_t_i_o_n _G_u_i_d_e to configure
  412.        the IRIS ATM subsystem.

  414.        2.3  _C_o_n_f_i_g_u_r_i_n_g__a__D_i_s_k_l_e_s_s__S_t_a_t_i_o_n
  415.  
  416.        A diskless IRIS ATM station must be configured in accord
  417.        with the guidelines in this section.
  418.  
  419.          1.  The station must have either two network interfaces
  420.              (an Ethernet from which to boot and the ATM) or a
  421.              local CD-ROM player from which to boot and an ATM
  422.              interface.  The remaining text and guidelines apply
  423.              only to stations that boot over an Ethernet.
  424.  
  425.              A diskless workstation (client) must boot (from its
  426.              server) over its primary Ethernet connection, hence,
  427.              the diskless  ATM station must have both Ethernet and
  428.              ATM connections.  Use the command below to display the
  429.              station's network interfaces, then verify that one of
  430.              the IP addresses in the display is for the Ethernet
  431.              local area network attached to the _e_t_0 interface:

  434.          2.  The _n_e_t_a_d_d_r value in NVRAM must be an Ethernet IP
  435.              address.
  436.  
  437.              The station's PROM must use the Ethernet connection
  438.              for booting over the network. To verify that the
  439.              system's PROM can access the Ethernet network, use the
  440.              commands below.  The values for _n_e_t_a_d_d_r and _i_n_e_t must
  441.              match.

  465.              Once the PROM has loaded the miniroot (bootstrap
  466.              kernel) from the boot server, control is passed to the
  467.              miniroot. At this point, the diskless client is known
  468.              to the boot server by the IP address in the NVRAM. If
  469.              this address were to change at this point, the server
  470.              would become confused and the boot process would not
  471.              complete. The best and easiest way to prevent this
  472.              from happening is to configure Ethernet (and build the
  473.              miniroot with Ethernet) as the primary network
  474.              interface.
  475.  
  476.              To verify that Ethernet is configured as the primary
  477.              network interface and ATM is another, use the commands
  478.              below:
  479.              # /bin/grep if1name /etc/config/netif.options
  480.                 <the display should be if1name=et0 or : if1name= >
  481.              # /bin/grep atm /etc/config/netif.options
  482.                 <the display should be if#name=atm##>
  483.  
  484.              The next kernel build (for example, _a_u_t_o_c_o_n_f_i_g) will
  485.              create an operating system in which Ethernet is the
  486.              primary interface.
  487.  
  488.        Note:  Once the miniroot is in control, the booting
  489.               procedure is completed using NFSr over the network
  490.               interface that the station's route daemon indicates
  491.               is the shortest path to the boot server.
